Year 6 Debating

Yesterday Owls class and the year 6 class from Lulworth were part of a parliamentary debate with a speaker and two sides: one side representing whether or not a stranger should be allowed to stay on the Island ( A book called The Island about a refugee.) and one side against him staying. The motion was discussed by all Members of Parliament with a speaker controlling the motion. At the end the total votes were counted and it was only a marginal of 19 -13 majority that the man should stay.

This was a great opportunity for our children to listen to other's opinions, to agree or disagree and even a few members changed their minds at the end. They grew in confidence to speak out in public especially to people they hadn't met before.

This is an ongoing writing project between the two schools which the children have found very rewarding.
